Components of MIDI
MIDI was introduced by the MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) in 1983. It is the system specification for standardized hardware interface and communications protocol to enable connection & communication between different electronic musical devices, Such as Synthesizers sequencers, rhythm machines, etc.
MIDI hardware specification calls for a special kind of moderate-speed serial port. It is usually located at the rear panel of an electronic musical instrument. It is designed to pass MIDI commands. MIDI port converts parallel computer data into a serial form. The MIDI connectors are standard 5-pin DIN jack which is of three types –
MIDI-IN: It receives messages.
MIDI-OUT: It sends messages.
MIDI THRU: It redirects a copy of input message.
